Capture by email

You have a personal Memento address. Forward anything to it — a newsletter, a receipt, a thread, a message with a PDF attached — and it lands in your inbox as a capture, exactly as if you had shared it from your phone.

Get your address

Open Settings → Email capture and choose Create my address. You get one address, made of random letters, ending in @mementokeep.com. Copy it into your contacts, or set up a forwarding rule in your mail app for the senders you always want kept.

The same screen chooses which space new mail lands in (your first space unless you pick another) and what happens when it arrives:

  • Analyse and file it — the default. The message goes through the same pipeline as any capture: Memento reads it, may ask you a question, then files the facts onto the right pages. Filing uses an agent run.
  • Keep it as reference — the message is saved and searchable straight away, and nothing runs. Good for receipts and anything you only want to be able to find again. You can still file a reference item later.

Gmail and Outlook send a confirmation code to the address when you set up automatic forwarding. It arrives in your Memento inbox like any other mail — open it there to read the code.

What arrives

  • The subject becomes the title of the capture.
  • The sender, recipients and date are kept at the top of the page.
  • The text of the message, with its links. Images from the body and tracking pixels are left out.
  • Attachments Memento can read — PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument, Markdown, text and HTML files, and messages forwarded as attachments — are read into the same capture, so one email is one item to file, not one per attachment.

Attachments Memento can't read — images, audio, archives, and any attachment over the size limit — are listed on the page with the reason, never dropped silently. The original email, attachments and all, is kept with the capture and can be downloaded from it at any time. To transcribe a voice memo you received by email, save it and upload it on the capture page.

Limits

Every email that is analysed and filed uses an agent run, and a mailing list can send more mail than anyone reads. So email capture has a daily limit of its own on top of your plan's agent runs: 10 emails a day on the free plan and 50 on Pro, counted over a rolling 24 hours. Settings → Email capture shows how many you have used.

  • Past the daily email limit, mail is returned to whoever sent it, with a note saying the address has reached its limit, and you get one notification. Nothing is stored.
  • Out of agent runs, mail still arrives. It waits in your inbox, marked Waiting, with a File it now button for when your runs reset — nothing runs until you say so.
  • Message size: up to 20 MB including attachments. Bigger mail is returned to the sender with the limit named. An individual attachment is read if it is 10 MB or less.

Keep the address private

Mail isn't accepted because of who it says it is from — that is trivially faked — but because it was sent to your address, which nobody can guess. That makes the address work like a password: anyone who has it can add mail to your inbox.

If it leaks, choose Regenerate address. The old address stops working immediately (mail to it is returned to the sender) and you get a new one — remember to update any forwarding rules. Turn off does the same without giving you a new address.

Memento keeps nothing about the mail it receives beyond the capture itself: no log of senders or subjects, and nothing at all about mail it refuses.
